Care Homes provide accommodation and care for individuals who are no longer able to look after themselves in a safe and secure environment.
The different types of care homes
There are two main types of care homes, either of which may be privately owned or run by charities or councils.
Many residential homes simply offer accommodation and help with personal care, including activities such as washing, dressing and going to the toilet. In a care home, trained staff are available to look after the residents day and night. They can provide similar kinds of assistance to that which family members provide at home such as help with washing, dressing and providing meals.
Nursing homes provide nursing care in addition to the services provided by other care homes.
Many care homes provide permanent accommodation for the elderly. Others are established specifically to provide homes for young adults with disabilities, or for children.
